Performance: The Unicorn

April 16, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

You can still gain access to our magical, culminating performance of our Eya at Ten season, available through May 16th.

The women of Eya present The Unicorn, a new, multimedia virtual program featuring the music and texts of medieval women composers and mystics.

Inspired by the mysterious tapestries known as “The Lady and the Unicorn,” this program amplifies the voices of visionary women who seek – and find – sacred union unto themselves. Featuring music of women, including Hildegard von Bingen, Las Huelgas Codex, the trouvères, and a special new commission by Baltimore-based composer (and friend of Eya) Douglas Buchanan.

The Unicorn explores the nature of personal agency for women, as they cultivate an intimate and personal relationship with the Divine Beloved amidst a society that was rigorously patriarchal and spiritually rigid. The program is divided into seven segments, outlining both the the seven steps of the soul’s progression (highlighted in the works of St. Teresa of Avila and Marguerite Porete, among others) and represented by the six extant tapestries featuring the Lady and the Unicorn.

The tapestries include the themes of Hearing, Seeing, Tasting, Smelling, Touching, and Desire.

We have chosen to insert our own seventh sonic tapestry: Union.

This will be an unforgettable event, with incredible music, stunning images, and the divine voices of Eya, woven together with the voices of the mystics, sung and recited by our passionate group of volunteers from around the globe.

The Unicorn will be livestreamed privately on our YouTube channel and available for one month (May 16th) following the live performance.
