Community Sing: Hildegard’s O eterne Deus

February 16 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

This month we will focus on Hildegard von Bingen’s powerhouse antiphon for the Creator, “O eterne Deus.”

Each Community Sing is led by Allison Mondel and live-streamed on our YouTube channel and Facebook page. All musical scores provided for free download from the Symphonia Series.

This antiphon is like peeling a mystifying mystical onion. Like so many of Hildegard’s songs, it is ingeniously layered and woven together with variegated strands of spiritual vision, theology, and personal meaning.

Let’s be honest: it’s a lot to take in, and a lot to sit with. But it also offers a lot with which we may respond and work with at a deeper musical, spiritual, and personal deeper level (if we are willing to dive in).

Here is the English translation:

Oh neverending God,
please may you smolder
in the selfsame love
in which you conceived
those limbs that we would become,
when you birthed your Son
in the first sunrise before all creation.
Look upon these urgings that fall on us,
and draw them out of us
through your Son,
and lead us deep into the joy of salvation.
